The potential exits coincide with upcoming special elections and the arrival of the FIFA World Cup in North Texas, events for which DART's services are considered critical.

The new chairman of the DART board took the helm just as several member cities threatened to leave the transit system. DART is trying to find a way to keep everybody on board and its future might just depend on it. Randall Bryant rode the rails today with Fox 4's Sean Rapp and Sean joins us live now. Hey Sean. Good evening to you Clarice. The chairman of the Public Transit Agency publicly talking about four of its 13 member cities. Four cities that are looking at maybe getting off of DART and starting their own transportation services as well as what the agency is doing to try to keep them in the loop. This is the hope of the future right here? It is. This is our Silver Line. Two billion dollar project. Ten years in the making connecting Plano, Richardson, Farmers Branch and Addison to DFW Airport. Well number one we're at DFW Airport. Now DFW Airport is the only airport in this country that has two commuter rails. You see the Silver Line here, the Tex Rail in the background as well as the Orange Line. It's the only airport in the country that has those features. Is the Silver Line the silver bullet to save DART in these cities that are wanting to talk about pulling out? Yeah well let's first make sure we understand the Silver Line is going to roll day in and day out no matter which cities are in as long as we have service you know to fund it. DART and the Silver Line kind of in a cloud with four cities. Irving, Farmers Branch, Highland Park and the biggest in the north Plano not happy with what they say they're getting back from DART on their investments. Collectively DART's 13 member cities contribute about eight hundred fifty million dollars each year in sales tax revenue to the transit agency. Plano specifically made three requests of DART last year which Brian says DART worked to provide or get close to and that now Plano wants more. Two weeks ago was the first time DART has ever heard Plano request for rail at 50 cents and so we've been operating over the past year of trying to figure out how to solve specifically for Plano's needs directly related to the letter that they requested three various different types of needs and so you know it's unfortunate that the goalpost is moving again especially with Plano but even with that we can accommodate that. The cities either have approved or are considering special elections in May where voters will decide whether DART stays. That happens right before the biggest sporting event in the world comes to North Texas the FIFA World Cup. Yeah it's the worst timing ever to even be even having this conversation a lot of hard work and planning from the regional level from the Dallas Sports Commission's level so many people have put in a lot of work and DART is a central player in the outcome of the success of FIFA the entire world's eyes will be upon us. Bryant says his focus as the new chairman is making DART work for every member city. The elections that are planned to happen in May they don't have to happen right and I think there's a lot of questions around if this city pulls out and that city pulls out what DART looks like and I think the main focus right now is keeping all 13 cities in. And the chairman says that they are willing to negotiate with these cities on all issues but they are not willing to sacrifice at the expense of current ridership any way that would prevent them from expanding or cover the cost for right now operation and maintenance.
