Cyclones have led to devastating floods and landslides in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, impacting millions across both countries. In Sri Lanka, torrential rains caused landslides and submerged most of the country's districts, with the military joining rescue operations to aid affected residents. 

Indonesia's north and west Sumatra and Aceh regions have also suffered severe damage, with entire villages destroyed and many residents losing their homes and livestock. Authorities are prioritizing immediate relief, while the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Vijay Sundara Puhami is angry and frustrated. This roadside fruit stall he opened 36 years ago was crushed under a wall of mud in Sri Lanka's central highlands on Thursday night. I have lived and worked here for so long. Now officials are telling me I should move. But where am I to go? The 65-year-old is one of many people who live in houses built in dangerous locations. Experts say cutting into mountains by blasting or removing rock weakens the ground. That's then prone to landslides when saturated by water like that seen in recent days. Torrential rains and landslides in these parts are nothing new for the Disaster Management Centre officials. But this time was different. Even though we're usually ready for the northeast monsoon rains, the sheer amount of water this time was a surprise. Roads on windy roads are a common sight, especially now, with this one closing the main access road to Colombo. Most of Sri Lanka's 25 districts have been affected by bad weather. Rains of more than 500 millimetres in a single day left swathes of cities, towns, villages and farmland submerged. The military has joined relief efforts, with Air Force personnel bringing people to safety. In Indonesia, the areas of north and west Sumatra and Aceh were the worst affected. Here in Pedijaya, receding water has left a trail of sludge and debris. Search and rescue teams combed this remote village three days after disaster struck. Most of the houses in our village are destroyed. Some are tilting, some are swept away. All our livestock are gone and none of the cars and motorbikes survived. We will try to reach other locations that residents have reported, but we haven't been able to access them yet. In the Samudra sub-district in northern Aceh, people tried desperately to save what little they could from the swirling waters. Even livestock was not spared from the deluge. Back in Sri Lanka, Vijay Sundara is trying to figure out how he will pay the loan he took to renovate his fruit stall. Across the region, many people have similar worries. For authorities here, dealing with the immediate challenge is the priority. But taking stock and quantifying the damage, not just material, but for each of the affected citizens is for another day.
