Colombian police have apprehended the suspected orchestrator behind last month’s assassination attempt on a presidential candidate during a campaign rally.

Colombian police have arrested Elder Jose Arteaga, also known as Elias El Costeño, in connection with the attempted assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe, who had recently announced his candidacy for president. Arteaga is suspected of organizing the attack, which involved a 15-year-old shooter who injured Uribe during a public speech.

Authorities have charged Arteaga with multiple offenses, including aggravated attempted homicide and the use of minors to commit crimes. Police have now detained five suspects related to the case, including the alleged shooter. Senator Uribe remains in critical condition following several surgeries. The incident comes amid a broader security crisis in Colombia, with recent coordinated attacks in the southwest.

Elias El Costeño, believed to be near the scene, is suspected of hiring the boy and giving him the gun. The list of charges? Aggravated attempted homicide, manufacturing, trafficking and aggravated possession of weapons. Aggravated conspiracy to commit a crime and use of minors to commit crimes. Police have now arrested five suspects, including the shooter. After several surgeries, Uribe remains in critical condition. Colombia is experiencing its worst security crisis since its peace agreement with FARC militants in 2016. On Tuesday, coordinated bomb and gun attacks killed at least seven people across the southwest, where the government stepped up its offensive against armed groups.
