Severe storms hit Queensland, Australia, resulting in injuries and significant property damage, particularly in the town of Esk. Nine people were reported injured, including one person hospitalized with a head injury caused by hail, as the storms struck during a school fete and affected surrounding homes.

Emergency services received nearly 730 calls for assistance due to broken windows, damaged skylights, and flooding. The storms also impacted central Queensland and Brisbane, with forecasts indicating the possibility of further severe weather in the coming days.

Bearing the bruises of a battering from Mother Nature, Peter Guy was in the firing line of freak storms at a school fete. The sun was out, there was a few clouds in the sky, there was lots of kids, families and everything and then suddenly it started coming over Black. Working the fryer of his doughnut business when missiles started falling, all he and his family could do was seek cover in their car. I just got a burn from our fryer because the hail was hitting into it. I just got some cuts from the glass smashing because I jumped in the back of the car. The aftermath laid bare. Fields soaked and swamped with ice, windows smashed. Peter was one of nine people injured. Another lady who was taken to hospital, she actually had a head injury from hail hitting her head. She was trying to do the same as us, try and protect and save what she could. The 150th school fete was moved to an earlier time, but still ran despite severe thunderstorm warnings being in place. We did choose to come out here, but we didn't know the intensity. Queensland has always had thunderstorms, so we just thought it would be a normal thunderstorm, not what it was. It wasn't just the school fete that was pounded by this storm yesterday. Surrounding houses here in Esk have also been severely damaged. Adam Charnock's home, car and shed are worse for wear. Buses skylight, some solar panels are busted. We've got probably eight windows in the place of buses. You can see Gav's here now trying to help us out and fix it up. And yeah, a bit of damage on the side of the house and the sheds are all banged up. And yeah, so it's pretty, pretty brutal. Family tried to cover cars on the street before they were caught out by the hail. Yeah, my son and I got stuck in between the two cars in the hail and got a few bruises on me. And yeah, it was it was pretty frightening, really. In all, just under 730 calls for help were made to the SES. Today, they were fixing skylights, which turned into unwanted water features. Sticks and leaves and I'm just getting washed around in pools of water on the kitchen benches. And yeah, it's crazy. The damage extended to central Queensland. A wedding caught in powerful gusts near Theodore. Brisbane also feeling the heat. Jesus Christ, it hit the roof above my head. And this might not be the last of the severe weather. On the forecast for Monday and Tuesday, there is potential for some of those to be severe as well. Not quite as potent as the setup we had on Saturday. Lawrence Jeffcoat. 10 News.
