A teenager, Ramori Roth, pleaded guilty to the murder of 11-year-old Courtney Freeman after shooting into her home in April 2024. Roth, who was tried as an adult, could face up to 30 years in prison. 

Following Freeman's death, her classmates and teachers at Ewing Marion Coffman School have been deeply affected and have taken steps to address violence in their community. The school has created workshops and annual events in her honor, focusing on anti-violence education and support for students impacted by similar tragedies.

Ramori Roth was tried as an adult after shooting into Freeman's home and killing her in April of 2024. In the past year, I've met with Courtney's mother and classmates at Ewing Marion Coffman School. Even she was like a sister to us and it just impacted our community here at Kaufman at such a deep level. Such a deep level is right. They invited me to their after school program this week. I got to sit in and hear how they're keeping Courtney's advocacy alive beyond the classroom. Learning starts in here, Elissa, some lessons can't come from a textbook. They found out who did it. That's Teresa Fligger. They the person is going to be going to jail. Now she's telling her students the person who killed their classmate. Courtney pleaded guilty in court over a year and a half ago. They lost her. I remember I remember when I found out about it I was just stunned at 1st, but then when it kind of hit me it was like I just screamed. Fligger never had a student of hers killed. The young girl they were so used to seeing show up to school every day. They sit in these chairs. I feel good that they got him and raise her hand to come up with solutions to violence at their after school program. Kaufman cares Courtney. She was a sweet girl. It's sad to see very young people get they like taking a look. Remember last week guys we started talking about what violence is and we talked about it was a part of creating a workshop with the Kaufman program about violence. Those conversations have not stopped. I've had another student share was just sobbing and he said my mom's boyfriend was killed and who's going to teach me how to tie a tie now? Who's going to? Who's going to throw the football with me? Kids see violence at home in their neighborhoods. The cycle stops at Kaufman. This is our responsibility. That's why teaching can't just be about curriculum here. It cost me. What do you think we need to do when beyond the classroom? Kids are already learning survival. Out of the mouths of babes, learned a lot sitting in that classroom this week. Kaufman cares still did its community violence workshop a Courtney passed away last year and they made sure to honor her. Going forward, they are dedicating an annual anti violence workshop to Courtney.
