It's the avant-premiere of a documentary in Chile, a world away from the Middle East, but home to the largest Palestinian community outside of the Arab world. Prominent businessmen and women, politicians, artists and diplomats fill the theatre to see Palestinian Land Global Cause. The documentary takes you to Gaza before and after October 7. The same with the occupied territories, when it was still a vibrant area. And now, when Israel is escalating repression and displacement of Palestinians amid mass land takeovers by Israeli settlers. But the Spanish-Chilean co-production is structured to guide the viewer through history, going back to the First World War. I have a special sensitivity. My grandmother would sing to me in Arabic. My grandfather was born in Bethlehem. But it's not just about me. I want to foster a much broader sensitivity. The documentary spares no disturbing images, showing the horrors that have been taking place for more than two years. Interestingly, the film begins with Hamas' attack into Israel on October 7. It doesn't try to diminish it or avoid the subject. On the contrary. But from then on, it makes very clear that a country's right to self-defense is not what has been happening in Gaza ever since. The documentary was made by two Chilean women with strong ties to Palestine. We want people to know that there is a story behind what is occurring in Palestine, that it didn't just happen. We want to show how the Palestinian people continue rising up and how that's ultimately made the world rise up, too. The audience seemed to agree. I'm very moved. I have no words. I think this documentary shows you the horror and brutality that a state is capable of inflicting, when power is in the hands of a few who use it indiscriminately to destroy a people. That's why no one can remain indifferent to this. There have been many films recently about Palestine. But the final message of this one, which includes very recent footage, is that the Palestinian cause is now finally being shared globally. Lucia Newman, Al Jazeera, Santiago.
