Officials in Northwest Territories say the wildfire burning near Hay River and Kátł'odeeche First Nation reserve is being held. Almost two weeks after being forced out, some Hay River residents are now returning home, while those living on the reserve will go to a temporary evacuation camp.

But officials are warning to stay on alert. The fire could burn out of control again. This family is ready. We got our bags packed just in case. Talked to the kids about the plan. The fire has already left a trail of destruction in nearby Kutlodechafers Nation, destroying 18 homes and buildings. The transmission line is fried. Our band office is burned, like, completely to the ground. The only thing that's standing is the safe. No one is allowed in until it's safe. You know, it's not going to be easy. Our lives are going to be all different when we do enter in. Battling the blaze on the reserve are homegrown firefighters. These two are on a day off but staying close by. It's kind of heart, you know, touches the heart, so close to home, so... Unable to go home yet, this couple is staying in Fort Providence, 180 kilometres away. Whatever news I get, I'll get it. I'll just go day by day. I got no control. Chief Martel says it will be weeks before her people can return home to see the damage. Until they can rebuild, they will be living at a camp right behind those trees, a bit closer to home.
