After the attempted coup, political observers pointed to the crucial role played by the neighbouring Nigeria in assisting Benin's forces during the crisis. Nigeria helped us a lot in the assault against the mutineers. I think that's a good thing. What remains now is how to correct this state of democracy. We are in a democratic state and our soldiers should stay out of power. President Patrice Talon described the coup late Sunday as a senseless adventure and said the situation was under control. He vowed to punish the mutineers and ensure the safety of hostages, including some believed to be senior military officers.
