Infant formula manufacturer ByHeart has expanded its voluntary recall, removing all of its products from shelves after at least 15 babies in 12 states were hospitalized with infant botulism linked to the formula. The FDA confirmed the presence of a botulism pathogen in one tested bottle, and the agency is continuing its investigation into the outbreak.

ByHeart, which accounts for about 1% of U.S. baby formula sales, stated that neither the company nor federal agencies have found botulism spores or toxins in any unopened cans. The FDA recommends that consumers immediately dispose of any ByHeart formula products, which were sold both online and in major retailers.

Turning now to a widening recall of organic baby formula linked to an outbreak of botulism among infants. Botulism is a rare but serious illness that can make it difficult for a baby to breathe. CBS News senior business and technology correspondent Joleen Kent takes a closer look at the spread. Infant formula maker Byheart has expanded its voluntary recall, removing all of its baby formula from shelves. At least 15 babies have been hospitalized across 12 states with infant botulism after consuming Byheart formula. How are those babies doing? You know, I expect them all to do well, although being hospitalized can be a nightmare for any parent. Dr. Marty McKerry is commissioner of the FDA, which is investigating the cases, and inspected one of the company's manufacturing facilities. So we did test one of the bottles from this company and did confirm that there in fact was a botulism pathogen. Nationwide, there have been 84 cases of infant botulism in the last three months. Typically, there are about 100 cases in an entire year. Kids younger than one are especially vulnerable because their little bodies can't easily fight it off. Symptoms can include constipation, drooping eyelids, and babies may feel floppy. Byheart sells an estimated 1 percent of all baby formula in the U.S. I wanted to take a few minutes to connect parent to parent. Co-founder Mia Funt apologized to customers for the immense anxiety and fear that we have been causing you these past few days. There is no risk of a supply shortage. I understand people have very raw memories of the last infant formula crisis years ago. Is the supply chain for baby formula in the United States safe? It is safe and it's strong, but it could be stronger. Joleen Kent, CBS News, Los Angeles. In a statement, the co-founders of Byheart say neither the company nor the FDA or CDC have found botulism spores or toxins in any unopened can of Byheart formula. They added, quote, your baby's safety is and will always be our biggest priority. If you have any Byheart whole nutrition infant formula cans and anywhere pack, the FDA recommends disposing of it immediately. The products were sold online and in major retailers.
