Bulgaria has decided not to extend a ban on Ukrainian grain imports set to expire this week. The ban was imposed by the European Commission at the request of five eastern EU nations. It's been a lifeline for the Ukrainian economy, despite the war and Russia's restrictions on Ukraine's exports via the Black Sea. Now, Ukrainian farmers could soon breathe a sigh of relief. On Thursday, Bulgarian MPs voted in favour of scrapping a ban on domestic sales of Ukrainian wheat, sunflower seeds, rapeseed and maize. During the last cabinet meeting, macro indicators were revealed showing that it's not so worrying for Bulgaria to give up on this ban. We will increase control over all Ukrainian goods, most of all in grains, and introduce strict controls on radioactivity and heavy metals. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the move, praising what he called an example of true solidarity. The ban, which was approved by the EU Commission in May, was also applied in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, which all share a direct border with Ukraine. Farmers in these countries say the availability of cheap Ukrainian imports brought prices of their own goods down. The restrictions are due to expire this Friday. But unlike Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia have said they would extend the ban, even if that means locking heads with the EU, which will give its verdict on Friday. Poland, which is gearing up for elections, has been particularly bullish. Polish farmers are not threatened by anything, because if the EU doesn't extend the ban, the Polish state will. Ukraine argues that furthering the restrictions on its agricultural exports is illegal and plays into Russian hands.
