Brazil's federal police loaded up bags of seized items from Jair Bolsonaro's Liberal Party headquarters on Thursday, as authorities confiscated the former president's passport and sought to arrest some of his closest aides, as part of the investigation into an alleged plot to carry out a military coup after he lost the 2022 election. That's according to sources who said police also visited Bolsonaro's beach house and told him to hand over his passport. One source directly involved in the operation said seizing passports can indicate the possibility of future arrests, forcing suspects to stay in Brazil to face any charges. In an interview on Thursday, current Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Bolsonaro was not prepared to leave office after his election loss. He went home crying and traveled to the United States because he must have participated in the construction of his coup attempt. So let's wait for the investigations. I hope that in the quickest time possible we can have a response to what really happened in Brazil. Bolsonaro told a Brazilian newspaper on Thursday that he left the government, but was still quote suffering relentless persecution, adding quote, forget about me, someone else is running the country now. The confiscation of Bolsonaro's passport represents an escalation in the probe against the former president. A far-right firebrand who cast himself as a Brazilian version of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Bolsonaro has already been ruled ineligible to run for political office until 2030 for spreading election falsehoods, and faces several other criminal probes that could land him in jail. He has denied wrongdoing and calls the investigations politically motivated.
