In Houston, residents are assessing the extensive damage from what was initially a Category 5 hurricane. Despite its downgrade, Beryl has caused much more damage than typically expected from a Category 1 storm. At the peak of the storm, approximately 3 million homes were without power, and officials are currently working to repair the damage.

The acting governor emphasized the importance of taking every storm seriously, regardless of its category. The storm is anticipated to bring strong winds and flooding to nearby states as it continues its path. Beryl is notable for being the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic, attributed to climate change.

For a Category 1 storm, it's quite a bit of damage for a Category 1. It's more than we expected. I mean, this is just the beginning of July. And for us to have a storm of this magnitude is very rare. As Beryl plundered Texas and the Gulf Coast, some 3 million homes were at the peak on Monday without power. Officials said they're painstakingly trying to repair the damages. And the acting governor took stock of the storm. Every storm is a lesson. And I've lived in Texas now for over 40 years. We've had a lot of storms and a lot of lessons. And this storm says, even if it's a Category 1, that might as well be a Cat 5 storm to you if you're in the middle of it. So the lesson, I hope, everyone, for this time, is we take no hurricane or no tropical storm for granted. While it is now weaker, Beryl is still expected to cause strong winds and flooding in neighboring states, as it did here in Galveston, Texas, on the Gulf Coast. The storm will go down in the history books as the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic to date, with its intensity and its premature timing due to climate change.
