Another surge of cool air is sweeping across the Upper Midwest and the Northeast as a powerful cold front moves across the region. Below average temperatures more in line with late fall are in place for over 100 million Americans.

A widespread cold front has led to below average temperatures for more than 100 million people in the United States. Cities including Nashville are seeing temperatures as much as 17 degrees below normal, with highs only in the 70s. Some locations, such as Mitchell, South Dakota, are approaching record low temperatures that have stood since the late 19th century. The Great Lakes region is also experiencing colder air temperatures than water temperatures, a phenomenon not uncommon for this time of year. The cold front is notable for its strength and early arrival, with several areas in the northern United States nearing or surpassing their average first freeze dates.

We're actually flirting with record cool high temperatures, basically saying that, you know, we don't typically see temperatures that are this cold for our high temperatures this time of year, and even potentially seeing some record low temperatures. We're very close in a lot of these areas approaching some longstanding records like say in Mitchell, South Dakota, a record that goes all the way back to 1898, and that forecast perhaps just one degree off from tying the record. We'll see what we get there tomorrow. 36 in Bismarck, 41 in Marquette. A lot of temperatures around the Great Lakes colder than our water. Temperatures and the Great Lakes not uncommon this time of year. When you start to see these cold fronts in the water, temperature changes a lot slower than the air temperature, but tomorrow once again, pretty far below average areas like Raleigh 14 degrees below average. Here's Monday morning, Nashville, Charleston, West Virginia. Areas like Lexington, Kentucky going to be really close to seeing low record temperatures, whether you're tying them or even beating those records. Just once again shows you the power of this cold front pretty early in the season, right? To see this to the average first freeze were pretty much right on par in areas in the northern tier mid September. Perhaps we're a little bit ahead of schedule, but you know, the farther you go to the South. Obviously it takes a little bit longer, but Reynolds with all of these really impressive cold fronts, it's hard to remember that we're actually still in just in September.
