The government is considering establishing a space surveillance centre, introducing mandatory drone registration, and investing €50 million in anti-drone initiatives, including the potential to shoot down unauthorized drones.

The incidents come amid EU pressure on Belgium to confiscate Russian assets for Ukraine's reconstruction, with Russia widely suspected but denying involvement. Similar drone incursions have been reported in other European countries, prompting several nations to deploy new defensive systems.

The Belgian defence minister is expected to table a 50 million euros investment plan for an anti-drone initiative on Friday. Belgium is also considering the option of shooting down invading drones. Belgium specifically has learned that we need a legal framework that allows to shoot down drones, and of course we actually need the military capacity that can do this, and this will now be speeded up so that we will be ready very soon to deal with it. The Russian embassy in Brussels has denied any involvement in drone operations in the Belgian airspace. Drones incursions have recently occurred in multiple European countries such as Denmark, Germany and Norway. Poland and Romania have already decided to deploy new weapons systems to defend against drones.
