This move surfaces as China's real estate sector grapples with a prolonged downturn, severely affected by a debt crisis among its developers, notably impacting firms like Country Garden. These entities have been forced to halt numerous construction projects, leaving a vast amount of pre-sold homes incomplete, with purchasers continuing to service their mortgages.

The situation has left the industry with an estimated tens of millions of unfinished apartments, despite various policy efforts initiated since 2022 aimed at revitalizing this critical sector of the economy. The real estate market, accounting for about one-fifth of China's GDP, plays a significant role. However, its current stagnation poses considerable hindrances to consumer spending and overall economic confidence.

According to Bloomberg News, the proposed strategy would involve local state-owned enterprises, backed by loans from state banks, to acquire these unsold properties from financially distressed developers at significantly reduced prices. A portion of these homes is intended to be transformed into affordable housing options. The plan is currently under discussion, focusing on its specifics and viability among officials. However, China's housing ministry has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this matter, leaving the ultimate direction and impact of such a plan in the realm of speculation for now.

China's housing ministry did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
