The city of Pokrovsk in eastern Donbass has been the focus of intense fighting for 18 months, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. Despite Russian claims of capturing the city, Ukrainian officials maintain that they still control the northern part of Pokrovsk and are prepared to continue defending it.

The symbolic value of Pokrovsk has grown, with both Russia and Ukraine using the situation for domestic and international messaging. Peace negotiations remain stalled, primarily due to Russia's demand that Ukraine relinquish territory it still holds, a condition Ukrainian leadership firmly rejects.

The eastern Donbass city of Pokrovsk has been fought over for 18 months at a cost of thousands of lives on both sides. Around a thousand residents are thought to remain in what was once a thriving mining community, then a frontline logistics hub. Ukraine denies Russian claims to have fully occupied it. The commander of a drone unit operating in Pokrovsk said Ukraine still controls the north of the city, a line he expects to hold. It's a strategic question, because I'm not aware of all the forces and means we have. But considering all of the efficient units I know of, we can defend Pokrovsk for quite a long time, and even counterattack. Its value now is largely symbolic. Last week Vladimir Putin wore combat fatigues to claim victory in Pokrovsk. Video showed soldiers raising Russian flags in the centre. Ukraine called it propaganda, Russia projecting strength ahead of a US-led peace negotiation. They call it a victory, but it's not a victory, because it's taken them 18 months, and they claim to be the second strongest army in the world. There's clearly some misunderstanding of their capacity and what they claim. There are clearly propaganda claims being made on both sides, targeting domestic audiences and US President Donald Trump. He's trying to mediate an end to this war, even possibly, as Ukraine and its European allies fear, on terms more advantageous to Russia. One of the major obstacles to a deal, Russia's demand that Ukraine give up territory that it still holds in the Donbass. That's a red line for President Volodymyr Zelensky, who knows the military wouldn't stand for it. The army is definitely not willing to give up territory. Can you imagine such a thing? On one lovely day we all say we give up our land. All along we've been fighting for our land and for our nation. It's absolutely impossible.
