Baltimore police officer Robert Parks has been charged with attempted murder following an incident on October 28th, in which he allegedly pursued a man with his police cruiser and nearly ran him over. The incident, captured on video, began after Parks approached a group near a liquor store and escalated when the man refused to comply with his instructions.

The Baltimore Police Department, under federal oversight since 2017 for past patterns of unconstitutional policing, called the officer's actions 'entirely unacceptable.' The Fraternal Order of Police questioned the transparency of the investigation, while officials confirmed the man pursued had a misdemeanor arrest warrant. Department leadership acknowledged that such incidents undermine community trust and ongoing reform efforts.

Now, a big update on a story we've been following. You may remember this video, a police cruiser chasing a suspect on foot, nearly running him over. Now, the Baltimore police officer who was driving that vehicle is charged with attempted murder. Tom Hanson reports on the fallout on a department already under scrutiny. That's Baltimore police officer Robert Parks asking a pedestrian to come with him around 5 p.m. on October 28th. The man appears to refuse and starts walking away. Officer Parks then allegedly tells the individual he's going to call the dogs and come get him before returning to his vehicle and pursuing the man through a vacant lot in his cruiser at a high rate of speed, allegedly striking him and nearly running him over. According to the indictment, the incident started moments earlier when Officer Parks approached a group of people, including the man later seen on the video, who were standing on a sidewalk near a liquor store. Parks then allegedly said to the group, quote, it's getting a little hot, guys, I just need you guys to take a lap. The video begins shortly after the group dispersed. The actions we saw in the video of Officer Parks are entirely unacceptable. Officer Parks is also accused of driving down this alleyway behind businesses and homes and plowing through a chain link fence, nearly striking the man a second time. In a statement, the Fraternal Order of Police questioned why, quote, certain important and relevant facts that were known to the officer during this encounter were not disclosed. The group did not elaborate on what those facts might be, but the state's attorney did say the man Parks was chasing had a misdemeanor arrest warrant. Baltimore PD has been under federal oversight since 2017, after the Justice Department found it engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional policing, including excessive force and racial profiling. And unfortunately, one bad incident like this sets you back months and years to all the progress that we've made. It's not what we teach our officers to do.
