The Truro chapter has launched the organization's first-ever theatre group. As the CBC's Luke Ettinger reports, their upcoming performance won't be their last, thanks to recent grant funding.

A theatre troupe composed of five actors on the autism spectrum is preparing for its debut performance of 'Living With Autism' in Nova Scotia. Supported by the CHURO chapter of Autism Nova Scotia, this marks the organization's first province-wide theatre initiative. 

The group will perform both their own original work and 'Dreaming in Autism' by Canadian playwright Christine Rodriguez. The project aims to provide insight into the experiences of people with autism, and a recent grant will help expand opportunities for more performers in the future.

Some final notes for these actors ahead of their debut performance of Living With Autism. The play is a creation of the five actors who are all on the spectrum. The project is being supported by the CHURO chapter of Autism Nova Scotia and is the province wide organization's first theatre troupe. In addition to performing their own work, the group has also rehearsed Dreaming in Autism by Canadian playwright Christine Rodriguez. Initially I was just doing it for the heck of it and to support my younger brother who was very interested in joining the play. But going through the process has been kind of eye-opening or self-reflective. Hopefully people who don't have autism can see for our point of view and the people who do have autism can feel better about themselves. Is this something that you continue to do? Possibly. I mean, who knows, maybe one day I could become a movie star. The show will include monologues from each of the performers' own lives and cast members act out the scenes at theme parks, fast food restaurants and comic book stores. For Lyon Shafreda, it was an opportunity to combine a love of video games and action movies with a powerful message. In the play, there is a section of it where I'm explaining what happened to me one night and I was thinking that in my mind that I would be in a sword fight against somebody with this specific sword because this model is amazing. I would like to hope that they do acknowledge what we endure in the world with us having autism and I hope that they can finally understand instead of all the negativity that certain groups of people have currently. The best day ever! The theater troupe is set to put on two performances here at St. Andrews United Church on Saturday but the curtains won't be closing for good. The Nova Scotia recently received a $2,500 grant from Doan Grant Thornton to help even more performers find their voice. Luke Ettinger, CBC News, Churro.
