During a protest on the Roebling Bridge, Covington police intervened after protesters allegedly obstructed traffic and ignored orders to disperse. Police arrested several individuals, using nonlethal weapons, including a taser, and video footage showed an officer punching a protester, which led to public outcry online.

Attorney Benjamin Pugh, representing some of those arrested, criticized the police response as excessive and claimed protesters were not given a real chance to disperse. Police Chief Brian Valenti stated that the officer involved in the punching incident has been placed on administrative duty pending investigation, and body camera footage is being reviewed. Among those arrested were two local journalists covering the protest.

As protesters began marching on the Roebling Bridge Thursday. Covington police quickly got involved. Police say the group of protesters obstructed traffic and created safety concerns. Police say they tried to get them to disperse, but they didn't. That's when police began arresting protesters. Police were seen using nonlethal weapons, including a taser. The police, I think, clearly overreacted. That's the voice of attorney Benjamin Pugh. He's representing some of the people who were arrested. He spoke to me over the phone Saturday and when they're giving instructions to disperse, they don't even give people an opportunity to disperse. Video of the incident sparked outrage online, particularly over this video showing a police officer punching protester Brandon Hill. Police Chief Brian Valenti says Hill originally tried disarming the officer who was holding a pepper ball gun. We caught up with Hill last night who said that's not what happened. If anything like that happened, it's because a random gun was pointed in my face. Valenti said that officer has been placed on administrative duty. I think they're probably concerned about the optics and they're concerned about the exposure for civil rights violations. Police showed some of the body camera video at a press conference Friday. Valenti said they're investigating the incident. There were between 40 and 50 officers that responded to this, so we have a lot of a lot of video to pour through and that is going to take some time among those arrested were two local journalists who were covering the protest. You don't go around arresting journalists. That happens in countries where there are no constitutional protections. As some people say, the protesters should have known better and maybe got what they deserved. What do you say to them? They don't deserve that. These are our friends and neighbors and. You know part of our community just because they're on a bridge doesn't mean they deserve to get their head bashed in in Covington. Alex Nall WCPO 9 news.
