U.S. airlines are preparing for a surge in Thanksgiving holiday travel following the conclusion of the longest government shutdown in the country's history. Although the shutdown caused a temporary reduction in airport operations and a nearly 5 percent drop in early flight bookings, airlines such as United, Southwest, and American have increased their flight schedules and seat availability compared to the previous year.

Federal authorities and industry experts anticipate tens of millions of Americans will travel by air during the five-day holiday period, with some predicting record-setting passenger numbers. However, weather forecasts indicate that freezing temperatures and high winds could impact travel in the north-midwest and northeast regions of the United States.

It was a close call, but the longest government shutdown in U.S. history will not dampen this year's Thanksgiving spirit. For 43 days, air traffic controllers and TSA agents worked without pay or called in sick, and eventually traffic out of 40 major airports had to be reduced. But with that chapter now over, federal authorities are feeling confident. So, again, we're very happy to be back. We're looking forward to an extraordinarily successful week of travel for the literally tens of millions of Americans that will be flying this week. Uncertainty from the shutdown has had an impact, though. As of Monday, flight bookings fell almost 5 percent from last year. Despite the dip, airlines are anticipating that airplanes will be filled last minute. United and Southwest Airlines have both increased flights and seats available from 2024's numbers. American Airlines noted that it will operate over 80,000 flights up from 2024, and the biggest schedule of any airline worldwide, according to its press release. Experts agree that this five-day Turkey holiday will bring flocks of travelers to airports. So I don't think that the shutdown will have any truly meaningful impact on the number of people traveling this Thanksgiving. In fact, by some accounts, we may have some record days of travel during Thanksgiving. Despite the best-laid plans, the weather outside could turn frightful and interrupt travel as freezing temperatures and high winds are set to affect the north-midwest and the northeast of the country.
