Warm, sunny conditions across the Northeast, especially in New England, will be accompanied by hazy conditions and poor air quality this week.

Air quality in the Northeastern United States, particularly in New England and the Great Lakes region, is worsening as smoke from Canadian wildfires is carried into the area by the jet stream. The resulting haze has led to diminished visibility and ongoing hazy sunshine, with satellite imagery confirming the presence of smoke over the region.

Forecasts indicate that these conditions will persist over the coming days, as high pressure brings clear skies and light winds, which exacerbate the smoke's impact. Rainfall is expected to be minimal, offering little relief, while temperatures remain warm but not excessively hot across the affected areas.

Air quality deteriorating in the Northeast due to Canadian wildfires

We looked at the wildfire smoke there in one context. You have a more detailed forecast map with more issues for us. Yeah, so pretty much if you live across the Great Lakes or the Northeast, New England especially, you are going to be dealing with deteriorating air quality conditions because of that Canadian wildfire smoke being funneled in by the jet stream. The steering winds are taking you directly across the Great Lakes and into parts of New England and the Northeast. So because of that, we've seen nothing but hazy sunshine these past couple of days, but especially as we had throughout this evening, tonight, and throughout the day. Tomorrow, we'll be watching out for hazy conditions in the forecast. So in addition to that, you can see here on visible satellite over the past three hours, we are starting to lose some resolution here off to the east as the sun is setting. But overall, you can still make out some of that smoke there off the Northeast coast that's really, really deteriorating those air quality conditions. And as you can see there in Rochester, just, yeah, definitely putting a haze in the sky where that sunshine should be. Now, over the next couple of days here, what we're calling for the forecast is for a dry pocket pretty much across the state of Pennsylvania with little to no rainfall here as we head into the weekend. The overall setup for today, hey, it's been dry. It's been warm. High pressure dominates the forecast. And because of that, that's why we've seen clear skies, light winds. But the clear skies and light winds have also led to those smoke conditions being even worse. Now, on satellite and radar, you can see that we still have some strong thunderstorms there across parts of Illinois bringing some flooding. Those are now working their way into parts of Indiana. But overall, that's just about it for the rain chances we're tracking here for the rest of the evening. Temperature wise, we have some 70s outside for Portland and Boston. But for the rest of the region, we're primarily in the 80s. But we do have some 70s here starting to creep back into the forecast across parts of the Midwest. 79 right now in Detroit, 77 in Cleveland, 79 in Indy. As we head into tomorrow, still tracking warm, not hot, but warm conditions here with lots of sunshine. But once again, hazy sunshine in the forecast with more showers and storms off to the south across parts of the Tennessee Valley. Temperature wise here for your Tuesday afternoon, Philly's 88, Boston down to 75. But for Detroit and Baltimore, we'll be in the mid-80s with lots of sunshine in the forecast for tomorrow. But still, there will be that hazy sunshine. New York, DC, Columbus, Pittsburgh, hazy sunshine temperatures in the mid-80s. Not a lot of temperature variation here that you would normally expect.
