Aid packages for airlines cancelled

The EU's top court says that the European Commission was wrong to approve a financial aid package Italy granted to airlines to deal with the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. The ruling concerns 130 million euros for three minor Italian airlines. It follows a similar decision earlier this month that ruled against the European Commission's approval of a six billion euro financial aid package to German national carrier Lufthansa. Both were granted to compensate airlines for the exceptional loss of revenues caused by the pandemic and both were challenged by low cost airline Ryanair at the court that found errors in the evaluation. The commission that can still appeal the decision says it will carefully examine the ruling before taking any further steps.
