A.I. helps stroke victims communicate

New research finds that artificial intelligence can decode speech and facial expressions from the brain signals of stroke survivors, helping people like Ann Johnson who lost her ability to speak after suffering a stroke communicate more effectively. This was the very first proof of principle of intelligible speech synthesis and avatar control from someone who can't speak. Scientists from UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley implanted a device armed with electrodes into Johnson's brain. The gadget measures the brain activity associated with the movement of her vocal cords, lips, and tongue. Those signals are then sent to a computer armed with artificial intelligence which transforms her brain signals into written text. I think you are wonderful. But that's not all. Using recordings of Johnson's own voice taken from her wedding toast, the AI technology also converts Johnson's brain signals into spoken word. An avatar Johnson chose appears on screen to speak and give off different facial expressions based on her brain signals.
