About 13,000 auto workers have walked off the job at three targeted factories after their union leaders couldn't reach a deal with Detroit's automakers. The United Auto Workers union is seeking big raises and better benefits from General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. They want to get back concessions that the workers made years ago, when the companies were in financial trouble.

As midnight passed in Detroit and still no deal, autoworkers geared up for what's being called unprecedented industrial action. Tonight, for the first time in our history, we will strike all three of the big three at once. The United Autoworkers Union has planned targeted strike action, hitting one assembly plant per company in the first instance. The first sites to be affected are a General Motors van manufacturing plant in Missouri, a Ford SUV and pickup truck factory in Michigan and a Stellantis Jeep factory in Ohio. Action could be scaled up based on the status of negotiations. The union's demands include a 36% hourly pay rise over four years, reduced working hours, changes to pensions and a clause to increase workers' wages against inflation. Members voted overwhelmingly for strike action if no deal was found by midnight on Thursday when their four-year contracts expired. We're proud, standing up for ourselves. Amid a cost of living crisis, recent polling showed that the UAW have enjoyed the support of 75% of Americans during this labour dispute and a majority would support the strike. But the big three bosses remain categorical. Forty percent would put us out of business, that's not a reasonable request. Ford and General Motors' last offer stood at 20% and they say the union has not responded with a counter-proposal. But with the Detroit Three turning combined profits of over $20 billion in the first half of the year, the union wants to see them dig deeper. The fight threatens to trigger higher prices for buyers and major disruption for the auto industry giants.
