Vaccination rates for kindergarteners have continued to decline, with an increasing number of children receiving exemptions from one or more vaccines. Dr. Celine Gounder, a medical contributor and editor-at-large for Public Health at KFF Health News, emphasized the importance of maintaining routine childhood immunizations, including COVID-19 vaccines for young children and pregnant women. 

Dr. Gounder clarified that concerns about vaccine ingredients such as thimerosal and aluminum are largely unfounded, as routine childhood vaccines have been thimerosal-free for years and aluminum is used to enhance immune response without evidence of harm. She also addressed misconceptions about vaccine trials, noting that vaccines, including those for COVID-19, have undergone rigorous placebo-controlled studies.
