The revocations were attributed to students overstaying their visas, criminal violations such as assault and burglary, and alleged support for terrorism. Of these, 4,000 visas were revoked due to criminal allegations, while 200 to 300 were linked to broadly defined terror-related offenses.

Legal experts note that some students have successfully challenged their visa revocations in federal court, with judges ruling in favor of students in cases involving free speech and First Amendment rights. The exact number of students ultimately removed from the U.S. remains unclear, as some government appeals are ongoing.
