Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the decision aims to remove politics from the process of naming naval vessels, emphasizing that the new name reflects military valor rather than political activism.

Harvey Milk, who served as a Navy diver and was assassinated in 1978, had become an icon for the LGBTQ community. The renaming marks a shift in the Pentagon's approach to ship naming, with Hegseth highlighting the intent to honor military service and heroism.
