Researchers at the University of Toronto have identified a link between GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, and an increased risk of developing neovascular age-related macular degeneration among older adults with diabetes. The study, which analyzed the health records of nearly 140,000 diabetic patients, found that those taking these medications had twice the risk of this severe vision loss compared to those not using GLP-1 drugs, though the absolute risk remains low (two in a thousand versus one in a thousand).

Medical experts emphasize that the benefits of GLP-1 drugs for managing obesity and diabetes generally outweigh the risks. However, some doctors may reconsider prescribing these medications to patients with pre-existing eye conditions or will advise them to monitor for any changes in vision. Patients are encouraged to report any vision changes to their healthcare provider promptly.
