The UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development celebrated Tuesday's 10th anniversary of the International Day of Family Remittances.

The United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development has commemorated the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Family Remittances, recognizing the vital role of remittances in supporting families and rural development. In 2024, over 200 million migrant workers from low and middle income countries sent approximately $685 billion to 800 million family members in their countries of origin.

Remittances now surpass official development assistance and foreign direct investment combined in many developing countries, funding essential needs such as food, health, education, and entrepreneurship. In 77 developing countries, remittances are a key source of external capital, representing more than 10% of GDP in 30 of them. The UN also highlighted ongoing efforts to protect these financial flows from harmful practices and regulatory hurdles.
