Most nonessential federal offices are closed in recognition of the day, which was officially named Juneteenth National Independence Day following legislation signed by President Joe Biden in 2021. 

While Juneteenth is the oldest celebration of its kind, some events are being scaled back this year. Organizers have cited safety concerns and growing resistance to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as reasons for the reduced festivities.
