Many creators on social media have a hard time making money from their work. Today, 12 years after the introduction of Patreon, the company says it's a source of regular income for more than 300,000 creators.

Patreon, founded by musician Jack Conte in response to the low earnings from platforms like YouTube, has grown into a major membership platform for creators. It allows artists, podcasters, and other creatives to receive regular payments from fans in exchange for exclusive content and interactions. Creators like Caro Arevalo and the team behind the True Crime Obsessed podcast have used Patreon to supplement or even replace traditional income sources, building sustainable businesses around their work.

The platform charges a fee of 5-12% on fan contributions and has occasionally removed accounts for violating its content policies. While Patreon requires creators to have an existing online following to succeed, it has become a vital tool for many, including high-profile users like Alan Alda, who uses it to support his non-profit. According to the company, more than 300,000 creators now rely on Patreon for regular income.
