India and Pakistan have approached the European Union seeking assistance to address recent tensions following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. India attributed the attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, to groups it claims are based in Pakistan. In response, India launched missile strikes against Pakistan, reportedly causing more than 30 deaths.

Both nations' ambassadors to the EU have spoken about the situation, presenting differing perspectives on the potential role of Europe in achieving a long-term resolution. India's ambassador urged the EU to apply economic pressure on Pakistan, asserting that the Pakistani government supports and arms terror networks operating within its territory. Pakistan, however, denies any involvement in the attack.

The recent ceasefire was principally brokered by the United States, though the EU’s foreign affairs chief, Kayar Kalas, also engaged with both Islamabad and New Delhi in efforts to reduce tensions. Pakistan's ambassador highlighted the importance of a rules-based international order and called on the EU to help prevent further escalation, emphasizing the risks posed by missile exchanges between nuclear powers.

The European Union has condemned the terrorist attack and affirmed the right of states to protect their citizens. It has also called on both India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and refrain from further violence to protect civilian lives on both sides.
