There are few images in tennis more iconic than the red clay of Roland Garros. The arena in Paris hosts the French Open, the second grand slam of the year and one of the sport’s most prestigious titles. The courts of Philippe Chatrier and Suzanne Lenglen have played host to some of the most memorable matches in the sport’s history.

The French Open, held at Roland Garros in Paris, is famous for its red clay courts, which have hosted some of tennis's most memorable matches. Despite their reputation, these courts are not primarily made of clay. Instead, they are constructed from five distinct layers: stones for drainage, crushed gravel, coal residue, crushed white limestone, and a top layer of crushed red bricks just one to two millimetres thick, which gives the courts their iconic appearance.

Building and maintaining these courts is a complex process, requiring up to 1.5 tonnes of material for the main Philippe Chatrier court and the efforts of 100 ground staff during the tournament. The maintenance routine includes sweeping, brushing, and watering the courts before and after matches to preserve their unique playing surface.
