Health advocates are pushing for the recommended age for colorectal cancer screening to be lowered from 50 to 45, responding to an increase in cases among people under 50. A recent study using predictive modeling indicates that starting screening at age 45 could prevent approximately 12,000 colorectal cancer cases and 5,200 deaths over a 40-year period.

While the proposed change could require significant investment and increased capacity for colonoscopies, experts believe the benefits may justify the shift. However, the majority of colorectal cancer cases still occur in older adults, and many eligible individuals are not currently participating in screening programs.
