Reports of sextortion have significantly increased, with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children receiving over 500,000 reports in the past year, including more than 100,000 cases involving generative AI. Experts emphasize the ease with which such images can be created and used for blackmail. In response, new US legislation has made online extortion and the creation of AI deepfakes federal crimes, and some AI companies are implementing safeguards to prevent misuse. The family and advocates stress that while these measures are important, ongoing efforts are needed to protect children from such threats.
