Lightning is a common atmospheric phenomenon, with over three million flashes occurring globally each day, which equates to about 44 flashes per second. In the United States alone, around 20 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes happen annually. Lightning can travel between clouds or from clouds to the ground, and the intense heat from a strike can turn sand or sandy soil into glass tubes called fulgurite. These glass formations are used to study lightning and originate from a bolt of electricity about as wide as a human thumb. The rapid heating and expansion of air caused by lightning creates thunder, and the distance to a lightning strike can be estimated by counting the seconds between seeing the flash and hearing the thunder, then dividing by five to get the distance in miles. Lightning often targets the tallest objects in an area, such as trees.
