In Jammu, located in Indian-administered Kashmir, the impact on the region’s economy has been significant, with factories in border towns halting operations. Many migrant workers have left the area due to safety concerns, and businesses continue to experience disruptions such as blackouts and travel restrictions.

Although shops in Jammu have reopened since the ceasefire took effect, customer numbers remain low. Tourism, an important sector for the region, has been particularly hard hit. Pilgrimage traffic and visits to local markets, especially those around major Hindu temples, have dropped sharply, leading to widespread booking cancellations for hotels and tour operators.

Some business owners have voiced support for government actions, expressing hope that long-term stability will benefit the region. However, the downturn in tourism has affected livelihoods for many, including daily wage workers who previously relied on strong tourist demand. The region saw more than 20 million visitors last year, but recent violence, including a high-profile attack on tourists, has dampened prospects for continued growth.

Regional officials had set ambitious goals for developing tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. With ongoing uncertainty, many in the business community worry that further violence could do additional damage to an already struggling industry.
