Cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is being tested in country Victoria to enhance the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) capabilities. The technology, developed by Nova Systems, is designed for drones to detect landmines from above. It forms part of a Test and Evaluation process being conducted at Latrobe Regional Airport. This process is aimed at integrating new sensors and systems into drones, enabling them to identify and differentiate objects on the ground more accurately and rapidly than human operators.

Nova Systems, an Australian engineering and technology company, is focusing on creating AI models that allow drones to detect suspicious items and assess damage to critical infrastructure. This development is seen as increasingly vital for military operations worldwide. Such advancements have become imperative following significant increases in drone use since the invasion of Ukraine. These uncrewed aerial vehicles are employed for surveillance and as loitering munitions, where they deliver explosive packages.

Ensuring proper testing and evaluation of this technology is crucial, says Nova Systems CEO Dean Rosenfield. It ensures safety, cost efficiency, and time-saving while introducing new capabilities safely. The tests conducted at the regional airport utilize both physical and virtual environments to enhance drone technology. This development is timely as the ADF recently announced an investment of up to $500 million to bolster Australia’s drone defense systems by 2032. The blending of physical and virtual testing environments is seen as a method to save taxpayer money while advancing complex systems. Nova Systems views unrestricted airspace at the test site as an advantage in pioneering this technology.
