In response to the situation, Prime Minister Harris disclosed plans for new legislation aimed at enabling the return of asylum seekers to the UK.

This development follows the British Parliament's recent passage of a bill allowing for the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda, a move the government anticipates initiating within 10 to 12 weeks. The legislation, considered controversial by many, has been identified as a deterrent, something UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has acknowledged as its principal aim. Fears sparked by the new law have led to increased asylum seeker crossings into Ireland, as noted by Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister, who suggested that migrants are seeking alternatives in light of the UK's daunting new stance.

Plans are underway for discussions between the Irish Justice Minister and the British Home Secretary in London, focusing on the potential for a return policy. However, a UK government source has clarified that any acceptance of asylum seekers from Ireland would necessitate a broader agreement with the European Union.

The Irish Justice Minister was expected to discuss a potential return policy in a meeting with the British Home Secretary in London on Monday. A UK government source said it would not accept any asylum seekers from Ireland without a wider deal with the European Union.
