Despite the horrors they have experienced, these displaced women in Rafah are trying to prepare for Eid al-Fitr. Gathered around a street oven, they bake traditional Mamu cakes and cookies. At a time of massive food shortages and little to no income, this project helps them survive. Despite the war and despite the destruction, we must live the Eid atmosphere, make the children happy with Mamu and cookies and put a smile on their faces. Nowadays, there is no joy in Eid because we've been displaced from our homes and we have family members martyred. Further north in Deir el-Bala, women are also cooking Eid treats with the aim of selling them to generate some funds. Unlike in previous years, the joint festivities surrounding the holiday are absent. We are deprived of all forms of life. Even if we return to Gaza and they return the buildings to us and rebuild Gaza, who will return our dead? They didn't bomb houses, they bombed dreams, memories, childhood memories. In Muwazi, southern Gaza, the situation is bleaker still. Women run around barefoot amid tents that are home to tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians. Few are in the mood to celebrate. Eid al-Fitr is set to begin Wednesday and will continue until Friday. The celebrations will mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan and are traditionally one of the highlights of the Islamic calendar.
